Note: Since I wrote the original blog post a month ago, Pinterest has changed their Terms of Service. I have chosen to leave much of my original blog post below intact because it appears that the new terms still say that we own the rights to whatever we are pinning, but some of the information below is no longer relevant.
***********
Do you have permission to pin? Or maybe the more important question is, "Did you know that you need permission to pin?" If you're on Pinterest, you need to read this blog post!
Recently, I read a disturbing article, Pinterest Users Need to Read the Fine Print, and I learned that when we signed up for Pinterest, we actually agreed to the following terms:
- We own the rights to images we are pinning.
- We grant full rights to Pinterest to use those images in any fashion!
Permission to Pin Granted!
Yes, you have my permission to pin! You may pin any image from Corkboard Connections, from Teaching Resources, or from my TeachersPayTeachers.com store. Please follow my Pinterest boards and repin anything you like to your own boards!
Unless you are a blogger or site owner, that's all you need to know! Just pin away to your heart's content! But if you are a blogger, keep reading ....
As I said earlier, I'm no longer going to pin from anyone else's site without permission. So I invite you to post a message somewhere on your blog that clearly specifies what you will permit when it comes to pinning. Make sure that visitors can find your permissions easily so they don't have to contact you to ask. Feel free to place the badge above on your blog to show people that they have permission to pin, and you may link it back to this blog post if you would like. Here's the code you can use to add it to the HTML code in your sidebar:
<center><a href="http://corkboardconnections.blogspot.com/2012/02/do-you-have-permission-to-pin.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.lauracandler.com/images/pinRed.jpg" border="0" /></a></center>
P.S. A few thanks are in order ... Last year I signed up for a course called Teaching Blog Traffic School that consists of 30 social marketing videos for teachers, and we have a super online support group. Thanks to Angela Watson of The Cornerstone for Teachers for sharing the Technorati article with the group. Thanks to Charity Preston of the Organized Classroom Blog who created the course! Finally, thanks to Denise Boehm of Sunny Days in Second Grade for her help with designing the Permission to Pin badge above. If you're interested in learning about the course, you can read about it on my Teacherpreneur page.

Laura,
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, I miss understood. Is there anyway to delete me from the link up? I gave the link to my blog and not the post. SUPER SORRY!!!!!!! Please forgive me for the stupid mistake. I thought your were wanting a list of pin safe blogs. If you can erase I will add back when I post about it. I have already added my free to pin badge. Again, I'm so, so sorry!
I figured out how to delete myself:) Sorry, I'm not real bright when it comes to the linky party stuff.
DeleteOkay - I was really confused! I went to look for your link and it was not there.

I'm glad you put this out there for all of us. I have actually seen some posts stating that you are not supposed to be pinning your own stuff....which I thought was kind of strange because it is such a great way to keep track of all of your own great ideas too. I appreciate this post and I will be putting one up today to link back to your post as well. Thanks;)
ReplyDeleteThank you for keep us all on our toes!

Laura,
ReplyDeleteI got a long response from a pin-follower.....what do you think?
"i found your pin while browsing the kids section. while it is important to protect original content and give credit where credit is due, that is not what the fine print means. the fine print is in regards to member uploaded content. pinterest encourages you to pin from the original source, but they do not require permission from the owner before pinning. check under the pin it button in the about section. you will find better instructions on pinning from the internet there and there are also resources for bloggers and website owners."
Thanks,
~Fern

DeleteFern, I don't happen to agree with this person's take on the situation. Have they read the terms of agreement for themselves? I did check the Pin It button area and there was nothing there that said you don't have to have the owner's permission. My feeling is "Better safe than sorry!"
DeleteThanks for the reply, I didn't read it the same way she did either, but I also felt on the defensive, so thanks for looking at her comment..."better safe than sorry!" is perfect.
DeleteThanks so much for the information and for sharing this with us! I linked up! I'm now a new follower of your blog!

Thanks for the info. I posted about it on my blog and added your button. But something strange happened... I copied your two bulleted items into my blog, then retyped them and deleted the copied portion. For some reason, sometimes the three pictures under "You might also like" were yours, not from my blog. So I deleted that post and typed a new one,not copying anything into the post and it's still happened sometimes but not every time I look. In case you see that, I wanted you to know that I'd fix it if I knew what to do. Sorry.

ReplyDeleteWhen I try to link with you it tells me that it is not a direct link. I would love to link with you is there a solution to my problem? Thanks
Thank you for this post and the button - it's on my blog sidebar and I've added a page to my About Me section. Don't know if the linky went through.
ReplyDeleteThink it's a great way to take care of this issue.
Thanks for your attention to detail on this, Laura! I'm going to use your linky party here as my "headquarters" for pinning now... so of course I'm following you! :)

Hi Laura! Found you via Bonita with her Encouraging Words for Writers - and this was encouraging. I have wondered about the copyright thing. Much to educate myself with on this topic and so glad you've posted this to begin the process of doing just that! I'll be following - always looking for great teaching and learning ideas! I'm here from The Writer's Reverie, but I'm also director of a home school resource network at Constellation Academy - link to that blog from my main blog. Will put you in the que there, too.

ReplyDeleteThanks so much for letting us know and allowing us to share! :)
ReplyDeleteI love your blog! I just started mine yesterday and already posted the permission to pin button on it... thank you for sharing your information!
ReplyDeleteOn a more ironic note, I just posted about student behavior tracking binders that I created. It just so happens that my school uses Thinking Maps and a colleague of mine came across your behavior reflection flow map. It was older and wrinkled from use, so I had my assistant redraw it in Word for me (I hope that is ok...I have kept the original with the revamped version to ensure credit continues to go your way in the future) I plan to utilize your behavior reflection flow map in my student behavior tracking binders. I provided links to your site and everything to ensure you get credit! :)
Thanks again for your expertise!
If you have a chance to add me to the list in the future for Permission to Pin blogs, please do so!

Thanks for the code for the Permission to Pin!
ReplyDeletePermission to pin is different than permission to repin, since the site is set to be collaborative, it really would have two meanings - the original pinner must own the rights to what they are adding as a pin, and I'm betting secondary is that by sharing those pinned images, etc on the site, they grant permission to repin, without relinquishing ownership. Additionally, most sites have their own terms that what you are sharing on your site is yours, so by default if someone "pins" it from a blog for example that has pinning capabilities, then really what they are doing is another form of repinning, since more than likely that blog is linked to the same person's pinterest. That would be my understanding anyway...in pinteresting terms (lay terms as they relate to pinterest)
ReplyDeleteYou have my permission to pin onto (General Education, Children,)
ReplyDeletePlease consider,?? al
Your site is amazing. I wish I had seen it when I was still teaching.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
