Original Post:
What is it about a colorful carpet that can transform a sterile classroom into a warm and cozy place to learn? The perfect carpet becomes a focal point for the classroom and a comfy place for kids to gather for instruction. Classroom carpets are not just for little ones, either. Even my 5th graders loved to spread out on the carpet for independent reading or learning games.

A few days ago I was contacted by Jim Banks, owner and founder of KidCarpet.com. His company creates beautiful, high quality carpets for the classroom, and he offered to give away a carpet to THREE different followers of this blog! I looked at the selection of classroom rugs he offers, and I was totally impressed. They are gorgeous and very durable. How could I turn down an offer like that? The winners will be able to choose any carpet up to 7'6" by 12' in size and worth up to $279! What a generous offer!

Why Every Classroom Needs a Carpet
I asked my Facebook fans to share why they love their classroom carpets and how they use them. Wow! Over 350 people responded enthusiastically! My favorite response came from Kathy Nee-Brown whose words inspired the title of this blog post. Kathy wrote,
"Comfy, colorful, carpets...they create a classroom community, a place where children can sit, listen, talk and build connections. In kindergarten, the carpets are learning areas where children learn alone or with friends. A classroom without a carpet is like a bed without a pillow, not quite comfy enough."

More reasons why carpets are awesome and how teachers use them:
  • Alyssa Gagnier shared, “I do ALL my teaching from my carpet and cannot imagine teaching in a classroom without one. I find students are more attentive when sitting at the carpet because of their close proximity to the teacher. I like sitting around my carpet with my students to share ideas and talk about our day. A carpet is an essential in any classroom!”
  • Shellie Leveratt wrote, “Community gathering place! Comfy reading place!! Students sit in pairs, not assigned spots, but partner arrangement helps with management. I love that I can see each student’s face!”
  • Jolene Maynard explained, “I teach grades 2-5 in a Christian School and I use the rug for centers, independent quiet reading or work, listening to tapes or cd's, cooperative buddy work, and we even do calendar and Bible devotionals on the rug, as well as reviewing group concepts or doing a read aloud.  It also helps students to get a chance to change locations throughout the day instead of sitting at their seats or a table for the whole day.”

Ready for the Giveaway?
Are you convinced that you HAVE to have a classroom carpet and not just any carpet? If your heart is set on one from Kidcarpet.com, it's time to enter the giveaway! You may only take each action once; multiple entries from the same person or IP address will be disqualified. 4. Comfy and cozy is what a meeting/reading space should be! It doesn't matter that my students are fifth graders. They LOVE getting down on the floor for a good story, a class meeting, or to lose themselves in a great book. I would love to add one of these wonderful rugs to my classroom. Thanks for giving us the chance to win one!

  6. This would be a great addition to my science classroom. I'm already using Picture Perfect Science, so we do a lot of reading. Sitting on our floor isn't the best place. This would also help hide cords that lead to my computer from the wall (tripping hazard).

  13. I would LOVE to win a new carpet for my classroom! The carpet I have now was given to me from another teacher my first year of teaching. While it serves its purpose, it's a little to "young" for my 4th graders. I'd love to get a sophisticated rug for my room!

  20. As a first year teacher (first grade) I had no idea how important a carpet is. The one I bought is ENTIRELY too small and put my in a rut as far as money is concerned. This would make a HUGE difference to my classroom as a second year teacher, next year. My kids and I would SO appreciate this. Right now they are sitting knee to knee elbow to elbow on the carpet and it is NOT working out. What an awesome give away!

    ReplyDelete
  21. My 3rd graders loooove getting the chance to get out of their seats and sit on the floor! They just hate having to sit on the hard, cold tile! Having a carpet would brighten our room and their enthusiasm for learning!

    ReplyDelete
  22. The rugs in my school's classrooms are stained and worn. A few years ago there was a problem with my heater and it flooded the room. The water marks can still be seen all over the carpet. Yuck! I would love a rug for my classroom to cover what's there. We sit on the floor often during mini lessons and Daily 5.

  23. I am fortunate to have the KidsCarpet oval alphabet rug in my classroom "Story Corner!" It is my student's favorite place to gather. I bought my own area rug for the space in front of my Smart Board though, and it has not held up well this year. I spend a lot of time modeling social skills to and building an atmosphere of "family" with my students, an the rug with the global children and handprints would be such a wonderful thing to have! Thanks for the opportunity! What a generous giveaway!

  27. Being part of the Global School Network, my kindergarten students spend the year learning all about North America. A Map of the USA rug would give them a great visual aid and really help them understand more about our great country as well as give them a place to sit, read, and learn!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. A large rug would be great to have in my kindergarten Title I room so my groups of 6-7 kindergartners can sit together on the floor as I read stories-their favorite activity when they come to my room. They currently sit in their chairs when I read.

    ReplyDelete
  40. This would be wonderful to win. My students have asked me several times why there is not a classroom rug in our room. I feel bad saying that I can't afford one. This would be such a blessing.

  41. This would be perfect for my class. I teach math, science and social studies and I could see many uses for this.

  42. As LBS1 (Special Education/Resource) teachers, we work hard to make our room a fun place for the kids to come and do their extra learning. We try to make sure they feel excited about being pulled out of class and away from their peers by making it an inviting space. We teach K-5, so it is hard to find items that work for every grade level, but having the Hoot Hoot Childrens Rug (FE725-44A) for our reading/learning space would be amazing! Our class would be a real "hoot!"

    ReplyDelete
  43. I would love to win a classroom rug to use this fall. I hope to have my own classroom this fall and I want it to be a bright, fun, learning environment. I would use it to enhance the learning environment by using lots of color in the room that would compliment the colors in the rug.

    ReplyDelete
  44. As a kindergarten teacher, it is important to make your students feel welcome in your classroom so that they adjust to entering school in a positive way. Having a classroom rug where each student can have their own special spot helps children to feel at home in the classroom making them more comfortable. Our rug would be our focal point in the classroom and the ABC Forest Animals Rug could be used in so many ways; when they are learning letters and when we are learning about animals! They would love it so much!

    ReplyDelete
  45. These carpets amazing! The one in my classroom must be original with my school. It is stained and too small for my students. I'd love an upgrade!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I teach in an inner city school district (a district which has been plagued with financial issues). Our district rarely has the money to purchase new supplies, much less furniture or new rugs. The classrooms have been using the same old rugs for years and years. My students deserve to have clean, new and beautiful things. They deserve to have a comfortable place to hear lessons and stories. The carpets can not only be a comfy place to learn, but the carpets themselves can teach you things.

  47. I would love to win this rug! The baseball one would be perfect for the sports theme in my classroom.

  49. I am a pre service teacher and will be graduating this fall. Winning a beautiful rug would be a wonderful start to building my classroom! I have received two job offers both in low - SES schools. I would have to provide all of my resources in my classroom. Again, winning a rug would be an amazing start for my class. Thank you for the opportunity!

  50. I used to have a carpet with a square for every student but when I changed schools I had to leave my beloved carpet behind. I am so excited about the opportunity to have another carpet where each student has a space! Thank you so much!

  51. This is such a great contest!! I have a carpet in my classroom but it only has 20 squares and I tend to get 21 or 22 children enrolled in my room by the middle of the year so I end up using a couple carpet squares for the new kiddos. Plus, the squares on my current carpet are so tiny, the kiddos often get distracted by stray knees and elbows!! Thank you so much for an amazing contest!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity!! I would love to win a new rug for my classroom! My room is all tile and the noise level gets extremely high because of it. Right now I have small carpets throughout the room, but I'm always having to rearrange them! A nice, big, new rug would work wonders in my classroom!!

  56. I am a first year teacher who is using free carpet samples for my classroom rug... needless to say, it would be nice to have a durable and cute one (like the ABC Dot rug) instead! I use our rug space for morning meeting, story time, read to self time, smart board activities, small group activities and more. It is a high traffic area that is the center of my classroom community. Thanks for this opportunity!!

  67. Thank you for the opportunity for this giveaway. With budget cuts, the fun learning environments are usually the first to not be funded due to needs. I love bright colors and fun learning places. We use our hand me down carpet to come together to learn, share, read, and debrief. We would love to have one that is not taped together in various places and that is vibrant with color. Thank you for the opportunity!

  73. I love carpets! Our district this past year graciously provided all K-3 classrooms with a HUGE 9'X12' rug. My kiddos love sprawling out and reading on it. I would love to have another rug so more than 5 or 6 kids could read on the rug at a time. How relaxing is it to kick back, relax, and read a good book? What better is it than to promote this in our own classrooms with the use of rugs and pillows? Thanks Laura for making this giveaway happen, you are awesome! : )

  75. I would love the rug. I moved to a new room this year. We need some cheering up since I'm in a hallway with only one other teacher. It would be used everyday for teaching and also during independant time for kids to relax and do self select reading. I just bought material to make pillows for the kids to use for fun reading so it would be a perfect match! Thanks for the opportunity.

  79. I think a rug would serve multiple purposes. It provides a group meeting area and a reading center. It would also be a great visual for students to see a map of the United States with mountain ranges and characters showing some of what each state is famous for.

  89. As a first year teacher, I felt that the classroom library was not only the most important part of my classroom for education, but also for making my students feel welcome, loved, and wanted. I am lucky to have a husband who designed a "English Library" for my classroom. I constantly add new books and encourage my students to enjoy reading in our library. A lot of my students do not have the luxury of books at home and the library has become theirs. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't look over, smile and realize how lucky I am to be able to watch young minds soak in the love of reading. Adding a special rug to our "English Library" would complete the cozy feeling I have tried to create.

  102. As a fifth grade teacher we don't get many things for children to be on the floor. I love to pull my kiddos up and read with them, teach from a picture book, share about our day. Plus with all the cuts in jobs and budgets, we don't have the money for this. I would love to have something bright to cheer up my room more!

    ReplyDelete
  103. I would love a classroom carpet. I have the leftover carpet right now in our building because I am the most recent teacher hired. The carpets look so nice and the reviews online were wonderful!
