NO joke. You can graduate summa cum laude and the daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin etc of a current teacher or secretary will get the post first. Connection, connections connections. Get to know the administration and make nice with the secretaries, so they can call you for subbing. Getting certified in Special Needs Students will help your odds as well. Every position in a school offers chances to learn new things and that can only help one become a better teacher. However, I...I think many of the tips are very good. However, I would like to expand a little on the last tip from the principal. Not every district is going to want you to show up in HR, or in a principal's office, etc., just to introduce yourself. In fact, the first district I got a contract in (I also student-taught in), had very little loyalty to me even though I did a good job. I was always on a temporary contract, so it was layoff/rehire every year. Finally I found a district that was less robotic, where the principal WELCOMED me into a family (called me from home to tell me I got the job), and I am now one year away from permanent status. Not all districts are created equally. I was getting paid more in my previous district, but was treated as a number. I was more than happy to take a little pay cut to enjoy the security and support I now have. My best advice is be willing to do any job, anywhere. I moved 900 miles away, and it was totally worth it. All of my friends told me that landing a teaching job in California would be difficult. I managed to get an offer within a week. My addition is, "Don't be afraid to think outside the box." Look into less traditional schools. Is there are charter school or private school nearby? In many states there just aren't the openings in public schools that applicants want. Take a job at a private or charter school and enjoy adding the full time experience to your resume.

Also, (and this may seem silly) be sure to fill out all applications correctly. I know many schools make the application process a lengthy one, but if you miss a step many times your resume's as good as in the trash: http://eslcarissa.blogspot.com/2014/01/common-application-mistakes-to-avoid.htmlCarissa Peckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07908750269180519422noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-871736047643866747.post-15555093225985167442014-06-27T17:15:43.268-04:002014-06-27T17:15:43.268-04:00I found the letters of recommendation from volunte...I found the letters of recommendation from volunteer work supervisors for whom I served were very beneficial. No matter how many degrees you get nothing truly teaches you how to be a teacher or what an actual "day in the life of a teacher" is like except DOING IT. Don't look down upon or pass over Paraprofessional, Co-Teaching or Assistant Teaching positions. Find a district you like through your subbing then apply for those positions. You will get in the door with the district you truly want to be in, can learn ALL of the essential teaching skills a book, class, or professor CAN'T teach you and better know.which grade level you are suited for. You will get paid in the process and have some great experience to add to your resume. It's what I did while I finished up my degree and became licensed and the first job openings for teachers were offered to me based upon my performance as a Paraprofessional. Don't think because you are degreed and licensed that a Para or support position is beneath you. Best of luck!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-871736047643866747.post-61715422773798284722014-04-29T09:27:07.777-04:002014-04-29T09:27:07.777-04:00In my experience, the male teacher out there are i...In my experience, the male teacher out there are in great demand in elementary school and are snatched up immediately.
